Earlier this year I was approached by Weave Youth & Community Services to do a few photography workshops for local kids. Weave is a great non-profit community organisation working with disadvantaged young people, women and children and has been in Redfern for over 35 years. The first workshop was with Weave’s Kool Kids Club (KKC), an educational outreach and prevention program for children aged 7-13 years living in La Perouse and surrounding areas.
Below are a few of my favourite photos from the past 6 weeks with them. I was very much off the rails before I found photography, so it felt good to give back and maybe pass on a passion that might help other young kids in the future, the same way that it helped me. These workshops have been really great and given me a new lease on life, I’ve come to realise that all the money in the world cant really make you happy, its the simple things like this that really make you happy. Seeing the passion and excitement the kids had when they were given their awards at their exhibition was amazing and definitely a proud moment. It’s amazing what kids can achieve when you put a little faith in them and boost their confidence, I wish there were programs like this when I was a troubled kid at school lol. I came to realise it wasn’t really about photography, it was about connecting with the kids, believing in them and showing them that its possible to do something positive with your life and giving them positive experiences. Alot of them reminded me of myself when i was young haha.
The kids are now pretty much family. It was alot of mayhem and a few headaches, but they got some awesome photos over the six weeks and killed it. Thanks so much to Weave and Mardi and Katie for making it happen.
